The Solution
The lack of access to proper treatment for mental health and addiction issues, combined with the cultural social stigma tied to admitting you need help, creates a situation that only exacerbates both the mental health and substance use issues AND their continued involvement in the legal system
A significant percentage of justice-impacted individuals live with often undiagnosed and untreated mental health challenges, including mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder, and trauma that often includes PTSD or CPTSD. And a disproportionate portion of the prison population suffers from substance use disorders as well.
These mental health and addiction issues are often a contributing factor to their legal issues, and also play a part in recidivism rates.
We believe we can significantly reduce recidivism by creating a long-term continuum of care that begins during incarceration and continues long after release.
By working with those currently incarcerated to establishing relationships that carry over into reentry, we believe trauma and substance use disorders can be identified, and that individuals can be given the tools and support to manage their conditions.
