CHANGING LIVES

NOT GOING BACK is a peer-driven, trauma-informed nonprofit whose goal is to facilitate treatment of mental health and substance use issues in order to reduce recidivism.

Through early intervention and education, mental health, trauma and substance use disorders can be identified and managed.

By beginning to address those issues while the person is still incarcerated, we can develop relationships that will continue after release. This long-term continuum of care facilitates successful reintegration back into the community and reduces homelessness and incarceration.

The Long-Term Continuum of Care Model

For most of it’s history, the addiction treatment field was largely based on an acute care model. Short-term inpatient treatment for those in need of an acute level of care. After discharge, the newly sober person was left to navigate their recovery largely on their own. Success rates were not great. Things began to change in the early 2000’s. Step-down programs began to be created - Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), peer coaching, and sober living became available. This new, long-term continuum model has created better outcomes. We believe the same model will work for those trying to build sustainable lives post incarceration.

“… the hardest part wasn’t prison — it was coming home”

Zach Matic

“I spent 40 of my 55 years in prison, and reentry wasn’t easy.”

Howard Jones
